A smart cooler in your gym costs the facility nothing. Chewings owns it, holds the King County food permit, stocks it and services it. You give up about four feet of wall and one 120V outlet. Members pay for what they take, and on sites that hit our traffic minimum we share a percentage of net revenue with the gym.
Why gyms lose the sale at the door
The moment a member wants a protein shake is roughly ninety seconds after they rack the last set. If it is not in the building, they do not buy it later — they get in the car and the sale is gone.
Most independent gyms know this and still cannot solve it, because the obvious fix is a staffed juice bar and the maths does not work. A smoothie counter needs someone behind it during every open hour, and independent facilities around Seattle open at 5am and close at 11pm. You are staffing eighteen hours to catch two rushes.
A cooler catches both rushes and costs the same at 5am as at 6pm. For 24-hour and keycard-access gyms it is the only option that works at all, because there is nobody on the desk at 2am to sell anything.
What a fitness cooler stocks
| When | What moves |
|---|---|
| Pre-workout | Energy drinks, cold brew, bananas |
| Intra | Bottled water, electrolyte drinks and packets |
| Post-workout | Protein shakes, protein water, chocolate milk |
| Recovery / meal | Protein bars, yogurt, wraps, hard-boiled eggs |
| Forgot it at home | Deodorant, hair ties, travel toiletries |
Your coaching staff sets the rules. If you want no full-sugar soda in the building, or third-party-tested supplements only, or a hard line on anything with a banned substance risk for competing members, that becomes the product guideline and we source to it. We stock Ellenos yogurt and other local brands alongside the national supplement names.
Boutique studios, climbing gyms and 24-hour facilities
These three behave differently from a big-box gym and are worth calling out separately.
- Boutique studios sell in sharp bursts at class changeover. Six people want a drink in the same four minutes, which is exactly where a queue at a counter loses you sales and a tap-and-go cooler does not.
- Climbing gyms have the longest dwell time in fitness — people are in the building for hours, often over a meal window. They buy food, not just drinks.
- 24-hour and keycard gyms have no staffed hours to sell in. An unattended cooler is the entire retail operation, and it runs on the same access control the door already uses.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a food permit for a cooler in a gym?
A micro market in King County is a permitted food establishment, and Public Health — Seattle & King County requires plan review before it opens. Chewings holds the permit and files the review. The gym applies for nothing and needs no food worker cards.
How many members do we need?
Check-ins matter more than membership count — a 600-member gym where 120 people come daily is a better site than a 1,200-member gym where 90 do. Bring your check-in numbers to the walkthrough and we will tell you honestly.
We already sell drinks at the desk. Does this replace that?
Usually it absorbs it, and takes the stock management, the fridge and the till reconciliation off your front desk. Some gyms keep a small desk selection for the things they make margin on and let the cooler carry everything else.
Can members put it on their membership account?
Payment runs card and mobile wallet, separate from your membership billing. Keeping it separate means no reconciliation work for your team and no disputes landing on your front desk.
Will it fit? Our floor space is tight.
The compact cooler takes roughly the footprint of a single piece of cardio equipment and needs a standard outlet, no plumbing. In most gyms it goes in the entry alcove or beside the desk, where members pass it on the way out rather than on the way in.
